Wine Tasting, Mainly Sparkling Whites But Others Too

We had another get together for our monthly wine club. Last time we did Pinot Noirs and this time the theme was sparkling whites along with seafood. The basic concept is that every couple brings a bottle of wine along with a dish within our theme for the evening. We met at David & Noreen’s place this time around.

Let me start by saying that I am more of a red guy, whites and especially sweet wines are not my thing, but I’m open to trying anything once, well maybe not anything.

Onto the wine:

1. Mumm, Brut Prestige, Napa – I personally liked this one, but the general consesnsus was a 5 or 6 rating (out of 10). Not too sweet, just the right amount of bubbles. Nice refreshing taste.

2. Chandon, Brut Classic – Fizzier and drier then the 1st wine. The consensus rating on this was a 6.

3. Moscato D’italia – Very sweet, dessert type wine. 6 rating.

4. Segura Viudas, Brut Reserva Heredad, Cava – this was my first Cava in a very long time. It had a pretty light flavor. Again rated a 6.

5. Lamarca Prosecco Di Conegliano Valdolbiodena – Best of the sparkling whites, rated a 7. This cost around $15 compared to the Cava at $25. Much better value.

We then moved on to a variety of other wines as our resistance dropped from the bubbly we’d already had.

6. Navarro Carreas, Malbec, 2006 – we gave this a 5 rating. A very young wine and it showed in that it was pretty light in flavor and body.

7. Essensia, California Orange Muscat, 2006 – a very sweet wine, though has a nice flavor. We gave this a 6. Generally, I am not a huge fan of sweet wines.

8. Luiano Chianti Classico, 2005 – Not a great wine. Very light flavor. Scored the lowest of the night with a 3 rating.

9. St. Francis Cabernet Sauvignon, 2004 – This was an ok cab. We gave it a 6. It suffered from not having much body.

10. Fetzer, Gewurztraminer, 2006 – Gave this a 5 rating. By this time I really had tried so many different wines that I lost my sense of taste to really have much of an opinion.

In terms of food, we had a lot of different things including fish cakes (I’ll post the recipe), sashimi (Johan caught the black seabass earlier that afternoon), shrimp scampi with orzo, stuffed mushrooms with crab from an Emeril Lagasse recipe.

Overall, another good night. We’re trying something different next time – European beers.
