Besito – Roslyn

Once in a while a restaurant comes along that fills a gap that a community (I) did not even realize that it had:  Fancy Mexican Food!

I have long been a big fan of non-fancy Mexican food – those same 5 or 6 ingredients mixed in so many different ways – it all works for me.

But fancy Mexican food has been a real eye-opener for me.  The menu at Besito is filled with all of your hard core favorites – the burritos and chimichangas and enchalatas… but they look beautiful, gourmet – with incredibly fresh ingredients.  They also serve great seafood – great cuts very fresh and prepared with light, tasty mexican-inspired spices and sauces that really complement the dish.  The guacomole is made at table-side and it is unbelievable.

The restaurant itself is a beautiful space.  It sits in one of these “dead spots” where the last three or five restaurants have failed miserably.  It is basically one big room, dimly lit, very modern decor with mexican accents.  The bar up front is usually 4-deep with locals waiting 15-30 minutes past their reservations.  The guacomole, chips and house special margharitas helping them pass the time happily.

Service is attentive, friendly and professional.

May faves are the atlantic salmon (pretty much all of the fish dishes, actually), the house special frozen margharita (warning:  house special margharitas are like nipples – 2 is just enough – three is too many).

In short, make a reservation for 2-months from now (the word has been out for a while) and look forward to an evening of relatively sophisticated local dining.
