Thai Kitchen III, Hillsborough, NJ

Went to Thai Kitchen in Hillsborough on thursday night for a casual dinner with a few friends. Thai Kitchen is located in a strip mall on Route 206 near a Stop & Shop and Blockbuster. It’s a relatively small restaurant and usually pretty busy both at lunch and dinner time. Tables are turned over pretty quickly so reservations aren’t really needed.

There are 2 other Thai Kitchens in Bridgewater. The Hillsborough location has been around for a couple of years. I’ve probably eaten here about 4 times, though my wife has been more often. She loves this place. It is one of the better Thai places in the area. There is another Thai restaurant on the south side of Rt. 206 which was empty the one time we went and the food really wasn’t that good.

The restaurant is pretty small, nothing too fancy but tastefully decorated. The wait staff is friendly and efficient and the food comes out pretty quickly too.

We ordered:

– Chicken Satae – Corry didn’t comment on this, so I assume they weren’t really memorable.

– Kra Pao Talay – Shrimp, squid and scallops with  basil and a spicy chili sauce. I had this. It was good, not great. I probably wouldn’t order this again. It was pretty light on the seafood for an entre costing $16.95.

– Pad Kra Pao – Chicken (or beef or shrimp or tofu) with onions, mushrooms, basil in a chili sauce. Kedar said he has this everywhere and it was good here.

– Chicken with green curry – This is my wife’s favorite thing here. I like it too, but it seemed to be way too spicy for Corry and he hated it. You can choose how spicy you want the food, and Corry decided he wasn’t going to have anything less spicy then anyone else so while I suggested the level 3 he went for 4. I guess it’s a manhood thing.

On previous visits I have had the Pad Thai here and some of there specials, all of which were very good.

If you are looking for a decent thai place that is reasonably priced, has a lot of variety and you don’t want to linger over dinner then this is the place to go. Hillsborough really doesn’t have alot of variety when it comes to food. It’s mainly a pizza, pasta kind of place so Thai Kitchen is a welcome addition.

This is a BYO place. There is a bottle king across the street which has a pretty good selection of wine.

  1. I had the Pad Kra Pao at Thai Kitchen with Immy and group – this is the first entree I get at all Thai places to gauge whether I’ll like the restaurant or not. Thai Kitchen’s version is very good – not the best I’ve had, but definitely better than most. I got 4 out of 5 on the hot scale – and it wasn’t too spicy. I will definitely return when I’m in Hillsboro, but I would not make a trip out there just for the restaurant.

  2. For the record, the food was not too spicy for me. I definitely spooned way too much of the green sauce over my rice, due to inexperience, but once I recovered from that (the following day) I was fine.
